For most of our careers, the promotion playbook has been fairly predictable.
Do excellent work. Take on more responsibility. Become reliable. Hit your targets. Build a good relationship with your manager. Wait for the next performance cycle, make your case, and hope the organization agrees that you are ready for the next level.
That system has never been perfect, but at least the logic was understandable.

That difference matters. Because the next promotion may not go to the person who works hardest inside the existing system. It may go to the person who improves the system. And I think that is the career shift more professionals should be paying attention to.
