OpenAI, supported by Microsoft, has unveiled groundbreaking upgrades to Canvas, its AI-driven tool, now featuring Python code execution and tailored GPTs. These additions aim to enhance Canvas's versatility in both programming and writing.
Canvas, launched in October, has already undergone extensive beta testing. Kevin Weil, OpenAI's Chief Product Officer, highlighted the transformative potential of the new features, particularly for developers and content creators. Google is going all-in on renewable energy to meet the growing demands of AI. With a $20 billion investment in wind, solar, battery storage, and grid upgrades, the tech giant aims to power its data centers sustainably while addressing the energy-intensive needs of artificial intelligence.
Massive Renewable Push: Google partnered with Intersect Power and TPG Rise Climate to develop gigawatts of carbon-free energy, including wind, solar, and storage solutions, with the first phase set to be operational by 2026.
Strategic Investments: An $800 million equity round, led by TPG, underscores Google’s commitment to accelerating renewable energy deployment, with significant grid upgrades included in the plan.
Future Challenges: Experts predict AI data centers could face energy shortages by 2027, but Google’s phased approach aims to outpace these challenges, putting pressure on slower-moving nuclear power projects.

AGI Test Progress Sparks Debate Over Flaws
Progress on the ARC-AGI benchmark, a test for artificial general intelligence (AGI), has reignited discussions on what it means to achieve true general intelligence. While the top score has significantly improved, the creators acknowledge potential flaws in the test’s design.
Rising Scores, Lingering Questions: The ARC-AGI benchmark, created in 2019 to measure an AI’s ability to solve novel problems, saw its highest score jump to 55.5% in 2024. However, it still falls short of the 85% human-level threshold.
Criticism of LLMs and Test Design: Creator François Chollet argues large language models (LLMs) rely too heavily on memorization, not reasoning. Some ARC-AGI tasks may unintentionally allow “brute force” solutions rather than testing genuine intelligence.
Next Steps for ARC-AGI: A second-generation benchmark and competition are planned for 2025, aiming to refine the test and drive research toward solving foundational AI challenges.
While ARC-AGI’s improvements highlight progress in AI capabilities, the debate around its design and the broader definition of AGI underscores the complexity of achieving general intelligence. The upcoming updates to ARC-AGI may help clarify what it truly takes to reach AGI.
