DeepSeek Tops U.S. Play Store, Then Faces Major Cyberattack

Chinese AI lab DeepSeek has taken the No. 1 spot on the U.S. Google Play Store, just days after securing the top position on the Apple App Store. This meteoric rise signals a growing challenge to Western AI leaders like OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic.
Explosive Growth: Since launching in mid-January, DeepSeek’s chatbot app has been downloaded over 1.2 million times on the Google Play Store and 1.9 million+ times on the App Store. The actual number of installs may be even higher, as the Play Store already labels it with 5 million+ downloads worldwide.
Cyberattack Disrupts Growth: DeepSeek detected the attack late Monday night (Beijing time) and confirmed it as a malicious large-scale assault after two hours of monitoring. While registrations were restricted, existing users remained unaffected. The app has since resumed normal operations.
A Cost-Effective AI Disruptor: DeepSeek’s V3 model offers ChatGPT-like features, including file analysis, web search, and chat sync across devices—all for free. Unlike competitors, the company claims to have trained its models using significantly cheaper hardware and far lower costs than AI giants like OpenAI and Meta, making its rise even more remarkable.
Industry Impact & Growing Adoption: DeepSeek’s rapid success has attracted attention from other AI startups, with companies like Perplexity and Gloo (Intel’s former CEO’s venture) already integrating its models into their platforms. This growing ecosystem could help DeepSeek carve out a lasting presence in the AI space.
With its rapid adoption and cost-efficient approach, DeepSeek is proving that AI competition is far from settled. As new players emerge, the AI landscape is evolving faster than ever—reshaping the market and redefining who leads the next wave of AI innovation.

OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT Gov for U.S. Agencies
As AI competition intensifies—especially with China making rapid advancements—OpenAI is strengthening its presence in the public sector with ChatGPT Gov. This new version of ChatGPT is specifically designed for U.S. government agencies, providing them with a secure and efficient AI-powered tool for their operations.
Government-Focused AI: ChatGPT Gov mirrors the capabilities of ChatGPT Enterprise but is optimized for public-sector needs, offering enhanced data protection and compliance with federal security standards.
Secure & Scalable Deployment: Agencies can integrate OpenAI models within Microsoft Azure’s commercial or government cloud, allowing them to manage security, privacy, and regulatory compliance more effectively. This could streamline the approval process for AI adoption in handling sensitive, non-public data.
Widespread Adoption: Since 2024, over 90,000 users from more than 3,500 federal, state, and local agencies have exchanged 18 million+ messages via ChatGPT, demonstrating its growing role in government workflows.
With ChatGPT Gov, OpenAI aims to provide a secure and scalable AI assistant for U.S. agencies, helping them streamline decision-making, automate tasks, and enhance public service efficiency.
Italy Launches Inquiry into DeepSeek Over Data Privacy Concerns
The Italian Data Protection Authority (DPA) has initiated a formal investigation into DeepSeek, the rapidly growing Chinese AI company, amid concerns over its GDPR compliance. The inquiry stems from a complaint filed by Euroconsumers, a European coalition of consumer groups, highlighting potential risks to the personal data of millions of Italians.
Privacy Concerns on Data Handling: The DPA is seeking clarity from DeepSeek on what personal data it collects, where it sources this information, and the specific purposes for its use, including data used to train the company’s AI models. The DPA also seeks more information on data storage practices in China.
Data Transfer to China: A significant issue raised is the transfer of data to China. DeepSeek states in its privacy policy that it complies with applicable data protection laws when moving data internationally, but watchdogs want further transparency on the legal basis for such transfers.
Web Scraping & Minor Protection: The Italian DPA is also requesting details on how DeepSeek handles web scraping and informs users—both registered and non-registered—about their data being processed. Concerns are growing regarding how DeepSeek manages the data of minors, as its age policy states that the app isn’t meant for users under 18, but enforcement measures remain unclear.
EU Scrutiny Intensifies: As DeepSeek’s presence in Europe grows, EU regulators are increasingly scrutinizing the app. European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier acknowledged that while it’s too early for a formal investigation, the AI Act will be applied to all generative AI services in Europe. DeepSeek faces a potential challenge not only over privacy but also regarding its censorship policies on politically sensitive topics.
As Europe turns its attention to the potential risks posed by DeepSeek, the company's unique business model—creating cutting-edge AI at a fraction of the cost of Western competitors—raises deeper questions about security, privacy, and intellectual property. With more regulatory questions likely on the horizon, DeepSeek’s rapid ascent in the AI landscape could soon face greater scrutiny.
Hugging Face Launches Open-R1 to Replicate DeepSeek’s Reasoning AI Model
In response to DeepSeek’s R1 reasoning model, Hugging Face is working on Open-R1, aiming to replicate and open-source the model and training data.
DeepSeek's R1 Model & Transparency Issues: Though R1 is licensed as "open," DeepSeek hasn’t shared the training data or model details, hindering research. Hugging Face believes full transparency is key for understanding and responsibly deploying the model.
Hugging Face’s Open-R1 Initiative: Hugging Face is using its Science Cluster (768 Nvidia H100 GPUs) to replicate R1 and is crowdsourcing contributions via GitHub. The project has gained rapid interest, reaching 10,000 stars in three days.
Significance of Open Source Development: Open-sourcing R1 allows for a better understanding of biases and training methods. Hugging Face believes open-source collaboration benefits the entire AI ecosystem by enabling collective innovation.
Concerns and Benefits: Despite concerns over AI abuse, Hugging Face sees open-source AI as a way to democratize access to powerful models and foster wider community progress.
By replicating DeepSeek’s R1, Hugging Face hopes to push for more transparency and foster community-driven progress in the field of reasoning AI.
