For this week’s feature, we asked Nicolas Babin, Business Strategist, Serial Entrepreneur (26 Startups), Board Member, and Author of The Talking Dog, a question that lies at the heart of innovation in the AI era:

“What’s your process for spotting high-impact AI product ideas worth building?”

Here’s how he put it:

“For me, spotting a high-impact AI product idea has never been about chasing technology trends. It has always started with long-standing, concrete problems that I have personally seen repeat themselves across industries and over time.

My reflex, built over more than three decades in technology, is to ask a very simple question: ‘Where are smart, committed people still compensating with manual effort, intuition, or Excel?’ That question already filters out 90% of weak ideas.

Once I identify a recurring pain point, I look for signals of persistence. If a problem has survived multiple technology waves like ERP, web, mobile, or cloud, it’s usually not a feature problem — it’s a structural one. Those are the problems worth solving with AI.

Then comes what I would call the reality test. I never fall in love with a model before understanding three things:
• Is there reliable data, even if imperfect?
• Can AI realistically augment decision-making, not just automate tasks?
• And very importantly: who carries the risk if the system is wrong?

Another filter I use comes from my startup experience, including failures. I look very early at adoption friction. If deploying the solution requires changing human behavior before it delivers value, I slow down. High-impact AI products usually succeed because they fit into existing workflows first — and only then transform them.

Finally, ethics and responsibility are not a separate step; they are part of the idea itself. Working closely with European institutions and regulated industries has reinforced one belief: trust is not a constraint, it is a competitive advantage. If an AI idea cannot survive transparency, regulation, and long-term accountability, I simply don’t consider it worth building.

In short, I don’t look for ‘what AI can do.’ I look for what humans have been struggling with for years — and where AI, used humbly and responsibly, can finally tip the balance. That’s where the ideas with real impact tend to emerge.”
