Microsoft Dominates AI Hardware with 500K Nvidia Chips in 2024

Microsoft is leading the game in the AI hardware space by purchasing nearly 500,000 Nvidia Hopper chips in 2024—more than double the number acquired by its closest competitor, Meta. This aggressive acquisition reflects Microsoft’s deepening commitment to AI innovation, including custom chip development and strategic partnerships.

  • Record Chip Purchases: Microsoft acquired 485,000 Nvidia Hopper chips this year, compared to Meta’s 224,000. This marks a threefold increase from Microsoft’s Nvidia chip purchases in 2023.

  • Custom Chip Development: In addition to buying Nvidia’s flagship chips, Microsoft is developing its own custom AI chips, Maia, announced at the Ignite conference in late 2023.

  • AI Expansion and Investments: Strengthened ties with OpenAI by participating in its $6.6 billion funding round in October & secured a 20-year deal to power data centers by reopening the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, highlighting its commitment to sustainable AI infrastructure.

Microsoft’s massive investment in Nvidia chips, alongside its custom AI chips and strategic moves in energy and partnerships, positions the company as a dominant force in the AI landscape. With its sights set on leading the AI revolution, Microsoft is shaping the future of technology and infrastructure.

ChatGPT Now Available on Landlines: AI for Everyone

OpenAI is breaking new ground by bringing its AI-powered assistant, ChatGPT, to landlines. Yes, you read that right—landlines, not just smartphones or desktop apps. Starting Wednesday, users in the U.S. can call 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to engage in a real-time conversation with the assistant. This step is part of OpenAI’s broader mission to make artificial intelligence accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of the technology they have at hand.

  • ChatGPT for Landlines: The experience is similar to ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode, enabling users to ask questions, translate languages, and perform other conversational tasks. However, it is voice-only, leaving out features like image recognition and multimodality.

  • Free Access with Limitations: OpenAI is offering U.S. users 15 minutes of free daily calling. After this limit is reached, calls will automatically end. While the service is free, standard carrier fees may apply, depending on your phone plan.

  • WhatsApp Integration: Beyond landlines, OpenAI has also rolled out ChatGPT on WhatsApp. This text-based experience offers a straightforward, back-and-forth interaction with the assistant. Unlike the official ChatGPT app, WhatsApp lacks advanced customization but does not require an account to use. Users can message the same 1-800-CHATGPT number to begin chatting, with a daily usage cap in place.

  • Future Enhancements: OpenAI is actively working on expanding WhatsApp’s capabilities to include features like image analysis and web search. While there’s no set timeline for these updates, they signal a significant leap toward making the experience more versatile.

With ChatGPT now available via landlines and WhatsApp, OpenAI is democratizing access to artificial intelligence like never before. Whether you prefer the simplicity of a phone call or the convenience of WhatsApp messaging, ChatGPT is closer to your fingertips—or your receiver—than ever. And with exciting updates like image analysis and web search on the horizon, the possibilities are only just beginning.

Exclusive: Google’s Gemini Faces Accuracy Concerns Amid New Contractor Guidelines

Behind the scenes of Google’s Gemini AI are countless contractors responsible for evaluating and improving its outputs. However, recent changes to internal guidelines have raised concerns about Gemini’s reliability, particularly on sensitive topics like healthcare. Contractors are now required to rate AI responses even outside their areas of expertise, potentially impacting the accuracy of the AI’s outputs.

  • Mandatory Rating Without Expertise: Contractors working with GlobalLogic, a Google partner, can no longer skip prompts requiring specialized knowledge. Instead, they are instructed to rate the parts they understand and add a note indicating their lack of domain expertise.

  • Previous Guidelines Encouraged Skipping: Earlier guidelines allowed contractors to skip tasks if they lacked the necessary expertise in fields like coding or medicine. This change eliminates that option, except in cases where prompts are incomplete or contain harmful content.

  • Accuracy Concerns for Sensitive Topics: Contractors have expressed worries about evaluating highly technical responses, such as those related to rare diseases, without proper expertise. This raises questions about the potential for Gemini to deliver inaccurate or misleading information.

  • Google’s Silence: Despite repeated inquiries, Google has not provided a comment regarding the policy change or its implications.

The new guidelines for evaluating Gemini’s AI responses aim to streamline the review process but may inadvertently compromise accuracy on critical topics. As Google continues to refine Gemini, balancing efficiency with reliability will be key to maintaining user trust.

Perplexity Acquires Carbon to Revolutionize AI-Driven Enterprise Search

Perplexity has taken a major step forward by acquiring Carbon, a Seattle-based startup specializing in connecting AI systems to external data sources. This move is set to enhance Perplexity’s capabilities in enterprise search, enabling users to integrate and access data from platforms like Google Docs, Slack, and Notion by early 2025.

  • Advanced AI Integration: Carbon’s retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology will allow Perplexity’s answer engine to access external databases, making it easier to generate accurate responses based on diverse data sources such as cloud storage and document repositories.

  • Enterprise Search Focus: The acquisition positions Perplexity to compete in the growing enterprise AI search market, leveraging Carbon’s expertise to help companies manage unstructured data through AI-powered tools.

  • Broader Strategy:

    • Perplexity’s second acquisition, following its 2023 purchase of Spellwise, reflects a pattern of strategic growth.

    • This move comes as enterprise AI search becomes increasingly competitive, with players like OpenAI and Glean leading the race.

Perplexity’s acquisition of Carbon marks a strategic leap into the enterprise AI search market. By integrating advanced technology to connect AI with work tools, Perplexity is poised to deliver innovative solutions for businesses navigating vast amounts of data.

Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA)

Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) in data science is like investigating a mystery box. You look at data to understand what it’s about, find patterns, and spot anything strange. For example, imagine you have a list of everyone’s test scores in class. EDA would be like drawing a chart to see who scored the most, finding the average score, or checking if anyone’s score looks unusual. It helps you know the data better before solving problems with it.
