Happy Monday, AI builders.
AI products have become remarkably good at creating a first impression.
A user sees a demo, signs up, asks the product to do something that previously took an hour, and gets a result in seconds. The experience can feel genuinely magical, which is one reason AI products have been so good at generating attention, trials, and early monetization.
Then something less exciting happens.
The user stops coming back.
This is becoming one of the defining product problems in AI. The market has spent enormous energy solving capability, and teams have become much better at getting users to the first impressive output. But the gap between “I can’t believe it did that” and “I use this every week” remains surprisingly large.
The latest data makes that gap difficult to ignore. RevenueCat’s 2026 analysis found that AI-powered subscription apps convert trials to paid customers 52% better than non-AI apps at the median, and they generate higher realized lifetime value early on. Yet annual retention for AI apps was only 21.1%, compared with 30.7% for non-AI apps.
That is a fascinating contradiction.

AI can make a product easier to sell before it makes it easier to retain.
And that changes what product teams should optimize for. The next generation of winning AI products will not simply produce better answers, generate more content, or add more agents. They will become increasingly useful as customers use them, fit naturally into recurring workflows, accumulate context, and create enough switching cost that leaving feels like losing something valuable.
This week, we’re looking at how that happens.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HARMONIC
Stop making AI decisions in the dark.
Leadership is asking: are we getting value from AI? Which tools are worth the spend? Where are we exposed? Right now, most teams have no idea.
Harmonic Security Usage Explorer changes that.
You get a complete picture of how your organization uses AI, automatically categorized into custom tasks and use cases.
You’ll see the projects being worked on, who’s using what tools, where AI investments are driving value, and where employees are engaging in risky behavior.
CIOs can rationalize spending and cut wasted licenses. CISOs can pinpoint where risk exists and neutralize it. AI committees can show exactly how their efforts are paying off.
