Trump Cuts 500 AI Jobs at NIST

The Biden administration’s AI policies are being dismantled as President Trump moves forward with significant job cuts at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This follows his decision to reverse Biden’s AI Executive Order and criticize the $53 billion AI CHIPS initiative.

  • NIST Job Cuts and AI Safety Impact: Approximately 500 NIST employees are expected to lose their jobs, with reports indicating that the AI Safety Institute (AISI) will be shut down. This institute played a key role in evaluating AI model security and setting safety standards.

  • CHIPS Initiative Staff at Risk: Beyond AI safety, the cuts will affect those working on the CHIPS initiative, which provided funding and incentives for AI chip manufacturing in the U.S. The potential removal of these staff raises concerns about the country’s AI hardware strategy.

  • Exclusion from AI Policy Discussions: Notably, Trump did not include AISI representatives at the recent Paris AI Summit, which focused on AI safety. The move follows the resignation of the AISI Director, reportedly due to political pressure.

  • Strategic Uncertainty: The decision to eliminate AI-related jobs—particularly within the CHIPS initiative—has led to confusion, given Trump’s previous emphasis on AI chip production as a key strategy for maintaining a competitive edge against China.

These cuts signal a shift in U.S. AI policy, with implications for both AI safety and semiconductor development moving forward.

OpenAI Expands AI Agent 'Operator' to Multiple Countries

OpenAI is rolling out Operator, its AI agent designed to perform tasks on behalf of users, for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the U.K., and more countries. This expansion follows its initial launch in the U.S. in January 2025.

Availability and Restrictions

Operators will be accessible in most regions where ChatGPT is available, except for the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland due to regulatory constraints.

Key Features of Operator

  • Can book tickets, make restaurant reservations, file expense reports, and shop online.

  • Operates in a separate browser window, allowing users to monitor and take control at any time.

  • Currently exclusive to ChatGPT Pro subscribers ($200/month), with future plans for wider accessibility.

Market Competition

OpenAI faces competition from Google, Anthropic, and Rabbit, all of whom are developing similar AI agents. However:

  • Google’s project remains on a waitlist.

  • Anthropic provides agentic capabilities through an API.

  • Rabbit’s AI agent is restricted to users of its proprietary device.

This expansion reinforces OpenAI’s position in the AI assistant market, offering enhanced automation and convenience to users worldwide.

OpenAI Reaches 400M Weekly Users

OpenAI continues its rapid growth, now serving 400 million weekly active users. This marks a significant increase from 300 million in December 2024, demonstrating strong global adoption of AI-powered tools like ChatGPT. While OpenAI has not disclosed how many of these users subscribe to ChatGPT Plus or Pro, its expanding reach signals a growing reliance on AI across various sectors.

  • Steady Consumer Growth: ChatGPT’s user base has expanded significantly, reinforcing OpenAI’s presence as a consumer-oriented AI provider. The steady increase in active users suggests that AI-powered chatbots are becoming an integral part of daily workflows, from casual use to professional applications.

  • Enterprise Adoption on the Rise: OpenAI reports 2 million paying enterprise users on the business front, doubling its numbers since September 2024. This growth reflects the increasing adoption of AI across industries, where companies are integrating ChatGPT into operations, customer service, and internal knowledge management.

  • Increased Developer Engagement: OpenAI’s API usage is also surging, with developer traffic doubling over the past six months. This suggests rising interest in building AI-powered applications, as businesses and developers continue to leverage OpenAI’s technology for custom solutions and automation.

  • Competitive Market Landscape: OpenAI’s announcement comes during increasing competition in the AI space. Just weeks ago, China’s DeepSeek introduced a range of AI products, including a reasoning model and an AI assistant app. By sharing these growth figures, OpenAI highlights its market strength and ongoing expansion, reinforcing its position as a leading AI provider.

With continued growth across consumer, enterprise, and developer segments, OpenAI remains a key player in the evolving AI landscape, adapting to increasing demand and competition.

Google’s ‘Career Dreamer’ Uses AI to Explore Job Possibilities

Google is experimenting with AI-driven career exploration through its new tool, Career Dreamer. Announced in a blog post, this tool helps users identify potential career paths by analyzing their experiences, education, skills, and interests.

How Career Dreamer Works

  • Users can generate a career identity statement based on their background, which can be used in résumés or interviews.

  • The tool provides a visual web of career possibilities, allowing users to explore different paths.

  • Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, can assist in drafting cover letters, résumés, and job ideas.

Key Limitations

  • Unlike job boards such as Indeed or LinkedIn, Career Dreamer does not connect users with actual job listings.

  • It is currently available only in the United States, with no timeline for expansion.

Broader Impact

Google designed Career Dreamer for diverse job seekers, including students, recent graduates, career changers, and military personnel transitioning to civilian roles. By helping users frame their skills and past experiences into a cohesive career narrative, Google aims to make career exploration more accessible.

As job markets evolve, AI-driven tools like Career Dreamer could play a key role in reshaping career planning.
